Wine writer Peter Gianotti highlighted Ponzi Vineyard’s 50th anniversary and three of the winery’s stand out wines, 2016 Pinot Noir Reserve, 2017 Avellana Pinot Noir and the 2018 Arneis in his latest blog post on PG Rated. He commends Winemaker Luisa Ponzi’s expertise, while describing the Pinot Noir Reserve with “spice and floral notes as well as suggestions of dark chocolate.” He continues by describing the Avellana single vineyard expression as “a silky, earthy, minerally beauty that announces itself with blackberry and black cherry….” Lastly he suggests that Ponzi should be added to the list of producers known for making standout Arneis. Arneis
Willamette Valley
This very rare and special Italian varietal is traditionally planted in the Northern Piedmonte region of Italy. During one of the many trips to visit the Currado family of Vietti Winery, the Ponzi family was surprised by the wine’s delightful flavors and lovely balance. Continuing their dedication to innovation in the vineyard and cellar, they returned to their winery and immediately planted cuttings of Arneis in 1991. Ponzi Vineyards is one of very few U.S. producers of this varietal.
